Transitional Object is a Butoh dance piece that engages in a dialogue with Bina Beitler’s artwork The Triumphal Arch. It was created in the space between war and emergency routine, between motherhood and clinical work, in midlife, and in a world different from the one in which I grew up. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma, the interval between things, the work explores the state of in-betweenness, when the old is still present and the new has not yet taken shape. It invites us to slow down into limbo and listen to what is fading away and what will emerge from the unknown, between things.
The sound work accompanying the piece is based primarily on sounds produced by tapping on the gate.
