Choreographed and performed by CHIEN Lin-Yi, Mr. Jo is a minimalist solo work that explores the condition of being watched and confined. Dressed in white, the dancer performs within a spatial frame defined by light and shadow, evoking the visual quality of an inverted shadow play.
Every bodily movement- whether explosive or restrained, extended or contracted- is meticulously controlled within a trapezoidal projection of light.
Rather than embedding complex symbols, the work presents the dancer as both the imprisoned and the free subject. The square of light is both prison and stage, and the audience, unable to escape their position as observers, remains outside the mirror- unable to reach the true, physical body.
The design emphasizes that the act of viewing itself is a form of limitation. Within this
construct, the dancer’s tension and precise control respond to the struggle of making one’s voice heard and breaking free from imposed boundaries.
