“Under” is a solo work that explores the relationship between the performer and the audience, examining the desire to control and direct using ordinary physical gestures that take on new shades in this encounter. The work navigates possibilities of communication, intentional commands, and confusions, all infused with humor, listening, and attentiveness, delving deeply into the experience of human interaction and the subtleties of influence. The dramaturgy is based on a predetermined score, yet the performer retains the freedom to make decisions and respond, blurring the lines between control and participation.
The work is characterized by joint isolation, articulations, and a deliberate interplay between tension and relaxation. Weissman is particularly interested in exploring the body’s potential by using its joints and edges as engines for movement, aiming to transcend physical limitations and expand its expressive range.
