“Only What You Take With You” is an intimate work about isolation, addiction, denial, and rejection; The process was heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye’s gesture and movement in performance, and through study of his physicality, we established the sense of groove which is prevalent throughout. The solo opens with a person standing at the door of a party, laughter emanating from inside. They are speaking to someone, until it’s time to say good night: the door slams, now derelict in the night. They stumble and attempt to cope with the aftermath of the evening. As the piece progresses we witness the weight they are carrying, but we also see them being carried by the groove of the music and rhythm of resilience. The piece is performed to the music of Anthony Braxton and Marvin Gaye, commissioned by the Houston Contemporary Dance.
